Saturday Wearable Dramatic EOTD / FOTD

I really am not loving the Revlon Whipped Creme Foundation! It goes on cakey no matter what primer or application method I use. Maybe I should try it without a primer?...

I used the technique my MAC MUA Malika showed me when she did my makeup a few months ago, using a darker shadow on the outer AND inner corner with a lighter shade in the centre of the lid. Darkening the eyes inner corner really adds drama to the eye and I really enjoy it for a change, whether it's using shadow or lining all the way in and down around with liner.

What's your look when you go out of your comfort zone?

Many of us Aussie beauty fans are now aware that Target Australia has advertised MAC Cosmetics at heavily discounted prices just this week. As low as only $5 more than our US sisters are paying.

Visits to a couple of Target stores in WA have shown me a seemingly random assortment of Studio Fix Powders (about 6 shades available) maybe 8 lipsticks, half a dozen lipglasses, and about 30 single eyeshadows, 6 powder blushes and eye kohl pencils in both Fascinating (white) and Smolder (black).

Remember what I said in this week's Illamasqua video about brand positioning? This is a perfect example of what happens with strange positioning. It's just plain weird. Kind of cheapens MAC doesn't it? Noone I've spoken to at my Target stores, even those working in the cosmetic department, knows anything about this deal, whether it's an ongoing situation or not, and especially anything about the products themselves. The whole thing just looks shifty. If I could count the number of emails, tweets, comments and YouTube messages I've received this week (and actually over the last few months since MAC was first spotted on saying, "MAC at Target??! What the....?!?", ..ummmm.... well, it would be a large number!!

And while I majored in Public Relations and know to believe pretty much anything BUT what you read (this blog excluded of course!), when a large corporation like Target goes so far as to guarantee authenticity in print and on the actual product display, and also in response to customer inquiries, I do put some faith in their dislike of litigation and paying out damages to the Estee Lauder, who may get a tad upset at the situation, not to mention damage to the brand. (conspiracy theories abound in my mind by the way, about lessons learned in buying MAC products from
anywhere but an authorized MAC store/ counter anyone? Maybe EL LOOOOOVE this, or planned it? I'll stop with this for now but still.... Anyone?)

Today I received a link to the following blogpost suspecting fakes, and whilst I don't believe a lack of logo alone is enough for a counterfeit verdict, or even the tacky, awful looking ad, consider the following photo.

On the left is a See Sheer lipstick I picked up myself from a MAC counter in the USA back in April. On the right is a See Sheer lipstick I purchased at Target today. Besides the obvious label differences, the smell is completely different. All of the 3 lipsticks I purchased from Target smell nothing like any MAC lipstick I've ever smelt before- they all have a much more chemical, "cheap lipstick-y" scent that is completely and utterly lacking in anything resembling the vanilla scent I so love MAC lipsticks for.

They do actually swatch pretty darn similar though I must say....

I decided to go and have a whiff of the oldest MAC lipsticks I have in my collection (all of which were purchased personally by me at MAC stores), and whilst all of them have lost that lovely vanilla scent, they still don't have this chemically smell that wafts from the Target 'finds'. Bit yucky!

Needless to say, I'm not shocked that there are MAC counterfeits around, but I am surprised that a corporation as large as Target would go to bat IN PRINT for their authenticity. Even at a stretch if they are in some strange way genuine, and made at the MAC factory on a day they'd run out vanilla scent (I know, I know!) but just old, that Target would source such shifty, old product in such a random assortment from an international supplier.

Sorry girls, the whole thing reeks. Kinda cheapens Target after all that really. Brand positioning....

God bless Australia and the Australian Beauty Industry.

Your thoughts, as always, are very welcome and encouraged!

FOTD using LUSH Emotional Brilliance Makeup

I am experimenting today with some of the new pieces I bought from Lush's brand new Emotional Brilliance line of handmade makeup. This was launched worldwide on Saturday and I've been so excited to try it out and share my thoughts.

I already had the Color Supplement and I'm not sure I really like it. Today with the primer it's just sitting on top of my skin in a cakey situation despite much use of a buffing brush from Real Techniques this morning. Perhaps it really is best mixing with something like a moisturizer or a primer or BB Cream. The Light Yellow shade though is pretty good- especially pleasing since Lush's offering is only 4 shades wide.

Like most liquid highlighters for me, I am not sure if the Skin Tint in Feeling Younger is doing much for me underneath my makeup so I did pop a little more over the top. I do like the pinky gold colour it offers but I'm still figuring out how best to use and apply this one.

I cannot stand the applicators that come with the eyeliners, but I managed to scoop out enough of the Quietly Motivated eyeliner onto the back of my hand and use an eyeliner brush of mine with it. It's a nice midtone brown with a goldy shimmer.

I agree with many of the preliminary blogposts and reviews I 've read thus far on this range that the Liquid Lipsticks are what stand out from this collection. Unfortunately due to a transit mishap, we don't have many of the lip shades available in Australia for another two weeks, but I did pick up 2 shades, both of which are lovely and double-up beautifully as blush. The shade I used today is the Believe, which is a bright coral pink on initial application (reminds me of MAC Impassioned- will have to do a side- by-side) , but blends out both on the cheek and the lip to something a lot more tame and wearable even for daytime office. The effect is somewhat more of a stain when you tap it on with your finger as I did today. And so far, it's incredibly long wearing- very impressed.

I added a dab of the Liquid Eyeliner in Dynamic which is just a gorgeous duo-chrome-ish rose gold shimmer that reminds me a bit of MAC's Rubenesque Paintpot. Perfect shade for the job, and another lovely way to multipurpose this eyeliner.

Have you checked out this range from Lush yet? What are your top picks or items on the wish list??

Have a gorgeous, brilliant day,
-Jodi xo

True Romance with Kat Von D Angeles, Deborah Milano & Nyx

So I cannot express the True Romance that I share with Kat Von D Eyeshadows. Every single time I reach for one of these palettes in my collection, I fall in love with it all over again. They are a bit dusty so I'm always sure to tap off my brush, but oh my god they're pigmented, smooth and rich and the shades themselves are divine. This Angeles palette is even harder to come by as a Sephora exclusive but it is absolutely stunning

Today's Deborah Milano Blusher in Rosa Pesca is one that the lovely MissMai27 from YouTube sent me from Paris in a recent swap. It is one of those beautiful blushes that imparts such a lovely colour and a gorgeous highlight at the same time. I applied my Lorac today before the blusher, forgetting that it is not needed with this blush! Loving it Sanni- feels so youthful, thank you!

Also, I've really been loving my lavender Nyx Full Coverage Concealer that I picked up at IMATS in New York in April. I really feel like this does for my undereyes what no peach or salmon concealer can do- brightening!! Here I've been thinking I need to correct the darkness thinking of it as blue, when I think what I really need is the brightening from a purple. LOVE!

Furthermore, I am finally happy with my undereyes again in terms of creasing throughout the day. I thought the daily creasing I have been experiencing was due to a new eye cream or part of my skin care/ prep routine, but I think the brushes I've been using (traditional concealer / foundation paddle-style brushes) have been letting me down. Instead, I've been using a sponge from Kit Cosmetics that looks like a double-ended Beauty Blender but is something so completely different and I'm loving it (ABSOLUTELY loving it!) for concealer both for under my eyes and all over my face.

What do you like to use to apply your concealer?

Wishing you a beautiful day,

- Jodi xo

FOTD Using Naked 2 & Revlon Peach Parfait Lip Butter

I'm happy with this look today using some tried and true products from my collection (although I went a bit heavy on the foundation which caked a bit into the day).

There are several comments on my Revlon Lip Butter Swatches Youtube video ( that the Peach Parfait shade in particular looks so different on viewers as it does on me, so I've been wearing it for a few days to get a good feel for it. It's definitely true that this looks nothing like the Peach Parfait that Emma Stone wears in the Revlon ads- bizarre but not surprising.

This is why researching multiple swatches is so important for those researching cosmetic shades and formulations. The number of variances (lighting, flash, photographic equipment, computer display settings, angle of viewing laptop screen, exposure, white balance, contrast, saturation, skin tone, application method, lip condition, bare lip shade etc), makes any individual swatch (even my much-utilized temptalia) relatively unhelpful without at least one other swatch of the same product as something to compare the first one to. At least for me... I strongly recommend using multiple sources to get a clearer picture of a swatch.

Hope you have a beautiful day today,

- Jodi xo

Reminder to Multi-purpose Your Products

One of the things I love about watching Monthly Favourites Videos and Tutorials on YouTube is not only that they're a great reminder to pull out some of my neglected makeup collection items, but it's also so interesting to see how different people apply their products, combine products, and think outside the box to come up with different ways to use their product.

I love see lip pencils used on the eye, brow pencils on the lip, blush on the eyelid, eyeshadow on the cheek for example.

Today's picture is how I used a freebie Napoleon Blush Patrol (from my In Style Magazine subscription deal last year) that was sooooo much more cool highlight than blush anything. It cannot be used as a blush whatsoever, but is OK as a highlighter in the face. I used the pale shimmer highlight all over the lid and inner corner and tried to pick up as much of the tiniest amount of blush/bronze shade that there was in the pan to use in my crease for a bit more warmth.

What products have you multi-purposesd lately?

EOTD with Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoos

I loved this look today using primarily Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoos. I applied Pomegranate Punk all over the lid, highlighting the inner 1/3 of my lid with Too Cool and then using Audacious Asphalt in the Outer V. Even the MAC girl complimented me when I popped by. I had to guiltily confess it wasn't MAC!! Except for the Omega shadow which U used to blend out the crease, and the Carbon shadow that I used to darken up the Audacious Asphalt in the outer V.

I'll be doing a review of this mascara soon. They were kind enough to send it to me for consideration and since it's one of those fibre based mascaras- I want to show you what to expect. Not to mention, it's Australian!

I also fell in love with this lip combination- all 3 products I love separately, and together they had a lot of impact, and it lasted pretty well during the day.

I love the Chanel foundation, but in preparation for a review and comparison, I'm having a hard time differentiating between the Matt Lumiere and the Perfection Lumiere. Very happy with both in terms of how they apply, coverage and also how they wear throughout the day. Have you tried both of these? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Lastly, I must admit I've been a bit scared by the shimmer in Napoleon's Blush Patrol, but loved it yesterday. As you blend it out, the shimmer is a lot less shimmer and more of a light sheen highlight. It also lasted quite well throughout the day, and I'm looking forward to wearing it again.

Hope you have a beautiful day wherever you may be.

Neutral Daytime FOTD with Chanel, Hello Kitty & Model Co

I'm preparing for an upcoming overview of my Chanel foundations and am currently trying to distinguish between Perfection Lumiere & Matt Lumiere. Today, Perfection Lumiere applied really quite matte, quite buildable coverage, was a decent colour match, didn't seem to have much effect on pore size and wore very well throughout the day. Figuring out much difference between the two foundations is challenging so needing a little more time for experimentation!

The Hello Kitty blush from
Priceline really surprises me in terms of durability. It was still there 12 hours later and is a nice, natural shade. Definitely would recommend that one.

The Model Co lipgloss I got free with a magazine recently and it's one of those that applies so sheer that the colour in the tube is not much of an indication of how it'll look on the lips (clear!). They smell and taste of strawberry and aren't overly sticky so a good option if you just want some easy, inoffensive shine.

Hope you have a beautiful day wherever you may be. Later,

- Jodi xo

June Faves up

Natural FOTD with Aussie Lip Combo

I am loving Lancome's Teint Idole Ultra for a matte, stay-all-day foundation that you don't have to think about touching up throughout a busy day. It's not pore-minimizing so that would be my one complaint, but I would thoroughly recommend it nonetheless.

The Face of Australia Glossy Lip crayons (trio available right now in Priceline) have also turned out to be quite a favourite of mine over the last week. I use the shade Sundae (pictured here) all the time and it's surprisingly quite pigmented (despite swatches on lips without liner previously not showing up much at all) and long-lasting especially with a lipliner. This Chi Chi Cosmetics lipliner in Centrefold a fantastic colour, is also particularly long-lasting and the 2 products pair together really really nicely.

Wishing you a beautiful day wherever you may be,

Melon Pigment Sunrise FOTD & EOTD

I'm using a sample of the new Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Compact Cream Foundation that I was given at a counter a while ago. This new foundation launched this month in Australia but I actually picked up a full-size in the USA at Lord & Taylor when I was there in April. The shade I'm wearing today (#40 Beige) was the only sample shade that was available at the time at the counter, and since the full-size is still pending a filmed haul, I haven't cracked it open yet. I think I bought it in the lighter shade than what I'm wearing today. I hope so! The #30 would definitely be a closer match. I do like it although it requires a bit of work, but I do still need to experiment with it more before my verdict. Apologies for the smoothing effect- makes it hard to check out the foundation doesn't it?!?

I really like the eyes today- always love love love wearing a colorful base using my beloved Inglot Matte gel liners. I don't get to do it too often since I wear fairly neutral shades during the work week. Today I used their yellow #84 which is just so vibrant and beautiful- exactly what I was after. The liner and the outer V could be improved but I'm pretty happy overall, and with the lips too.

Hope you're having a luminous day wherever you may be..

FOTD & EOTD loreal nude magique bb cream, Mac Eyeshadows, essence XXXL frosty gloss

The Loreal Nude Magique BB Cream is, in my mind, a close enough dupe for Origins Vita-zing. Much like Garnier's Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream offering, it's a far far FAR cry from the BB Creams that we've come to know from Asian countries where they originate. Without the hefty price tag, I don't hate the Loreal as much as the Origins- and given that I'm using this in the winter, I'm not sure if it's less shiny than I found the Origins in the summer or not. (In this cold Perth winter weather, nothing's too much of a mid-day oily problem right now.) Like the Origins Vita-zing when dispensed, the Loreal BB Cream is a grey white 'runny' cream with tiny visible micro-beads, which seem to 'burst' and release their colour once you start blending the light cream down. I don't remember the texture of the Vita-zing being anything other than a light creamy consistency, but the Loreal Nude Magique is most definitely grainy (albeit fine) and conjures up in me every single an image of what it must feel like to be licked all over my entire face by a cat's tongue. Bizarre, but not a deal breaker for me. It's a nice enough product and while it offers completely different texture from the Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector, I can see fans of the look of that one on the skin enjoying this one also. It's extremely light coverage that adds a slight evenness of skin tone. I might do a demo of this on YouTube since it's so different to anything else on the market (Origins excepted). Thoughts?...

I did a couple of different things with my lips today- using a bronze eyeliner as a lip liner base, and using a very frosty shade from Essence's XXXL Shine Gloss range. I loved the finish and the shine from the frost and will definitely be using that combination more often.

Hope you're having a Magique day wherever you may be,

bobbi brown ultra nude EOTD with naked velvet lip & dollskin cheek

Another neutral, simple, work-appropriate FOTD today, wearing the Bourjois Healthy Mix over Revlon's Color Correcting (and not labelled as such but definitely mattifying) Primer and under It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Loose Powder using Kevin James Bennett's / Wayne Goss's roll-and-press-with-a-puff method followed with a spritz of makeup finishing spritz. This quite happily lasted all day without requiring touch-up, providing a surprisingly fairly matte finish on my oily-combination skin. I think the choice of primer and powder have a lot to do with this and I'm looking forward to trying it with some strobe cream underneath it mixed in for some more glow next time.

Also, I'm always so surprised how often the least amazingly eye-catching products can be so effective on the face (MAC Harmony blush or Tarte's Exposed anyone??!!). Bobbi Brown's Ultra Nude Eye Palette is so plain in its packaging and yet so absolutely perfect in so many natural, neutral ways.

I've said it before and I'll say it again- Loreal's Million Volume Lashes (gold tube) is firmly one of my all time favourite mascaras- amazing volume, length, curl, that doesn't flake or smudge at all throughout the day. It seriously checks every single box for me and with an affordable price tag to boot.

Finally, the lips- I am seriously loving my new nude lippies, with Coral Colours' Naked Velvet lipstick fast making it's way into my current faves (along with Loreal's Color Riche lipstick in Nude- not pictured). More on those later...

Adios mamacitas, Happy West Australia Day, Happy Birthday my dear sweet hubster Tony, and may you all have a beautiful, blessed week,

Natural Coral Colours EOTD with Loreal Nude Lip and Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation

I pulled out my Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation today, since I'm wanting to film a review for it soon. I like the medium coverage and the lovely natural sheen finish.  It stayed looking great all day and into the night too. The shade #53 is pretty good on me but perhaps a smidgen too yellow/dark (this is as pale as I get) so I'm wondering if the #52 is a better fit or if it's too pale for me. I applied the MAC Face & Body with the same foundation brush in the highlight areas just to bring the shade down a notch.

I do really like the shades of the new Coral Colours eyeshadow palette. I can see that the softness and chalkiness of the powder would make you go through it very quickly, but at less than $10, who cares? The shades are nice and neutral- even the shades that look shimmery in the palette and on a finger swatch blend out to something not shimmery. They have enough colour payoff to keep me happy with surprising non-existent fall-out, and blend OK. Buttery or creamy they are not, but it's an OK quad. Will play with it more to see how I like the darker shades on the lid and keep you posted. I'm thinking though that for that amount of money, a Maybelline (or Sleek, Nyx, Milani, Jordana or 88 palette ) would be a better value.

Lastly, I'm absolutely love love loving the Dior lipliner I picked up recently- a gorgeous nude, and the Loreal Nude lipstick is a perfect everyday neutral that you can easily apply without the need for a mirror. The Chi Chi lipgloss feels quite slippery (rather than tacky) so without looking at the ingredients, I'm thinking it's more of an oil / petrolatum base, and not particularly long-lasting, but the residue keeps my lips from feeling too dry for hours, way after the colour has worn off.

Hope you're having a beautiful, easy weekend wherever you may be, and a special shout-out to my fellow West Australians for Western Australia Day Public Holiday tomorrow (our first ever- to replace Foundation Day). May you relax, enjoy and celebrate how fortunate we are to be West Aussie!
